The cell phone has become an essential communications tool. Although it can offer a bit of insurance when we need it, there are many of us over the age of 60 who do not carry a cell phone. Perhaps it’s because cell phones are too complex, too small, or too easy to lose, or perhaps they are too expensive or you have too few people to call.

However, you may want to view the cell phone as your personal safety device, especially if you live alone or some distance from family members. A cell phone could be the most valuable item in your pocket when a sudden need arises, especially with pay phones disappearing from the landscape. As more and more people carry their own phones, expecting to find a pay phone on the next street corner is becoming a less viable option.

Here are ten good reasons why you should own and carry a cell phone.

Weather and Acts of Nature

Many of us live in regions of the country where a sudden earthquake or tornado could happen without warning. Then there are the other events, such as hurricanes, fires, blizzards, ice storms, flooding, landslides, or a prolonged power outage, that may require a quick evacuation or move to a shelter. A cell phone is important to either get help or let others know your location and level of safety.

Travel Safety

In retirement, we may travel more – by car, RV, ship, train, plane or bus. It’s a good idea to let a family member or friend know where you are, where you are going next, and when you expect to arrive. While you are away, you can designate a friend or family member to contact you if there is a problem with your home, pet, friends or family.

Traffic Problems

No matter how well we plan, there can be traffic jams that cause us to be late for appointment, dinner reservation, or a party. A cell phone is handy to have to alert your destination of your new time of arrival.

Accidents Happen

When we least expect it, accidents happen. Most are minor, but as we age, even the minor ones can have major results. A simple fall on a slippery surface may not be just an embarrassment, but require a call for help, especially if no one sees you fall. An auto accident, empty gas tank, or flat tire always seems to happen in the middle of a bad weather. At those times, a cell phone is invaluable to summon police or a tow truck.

1. Cell phones save lives. For those unlucky enough to be in a car accident or have been kind enough to stop at one, chances are the 911 operator you called told you that you were caller number 14 about this accident. There is nothing wrong with being number 14, it proves that people are kind and that the phones do work and help save lives.

2. Text messaging can often repair friendships and relationships. Due to the short, to the point nature of texting, each side of the conversation usually just says what they need to, no fluff, no crying, and no drama. I know several people who have mended things together after texting back and forth a few times.

3. I need a photo of that! Nearly all phones come with a camera, albeit a crappy one, they do have their purpose. 4. I�m lost, can you give me directions. I don�t care who you are, you�ve been lost at some point or another. There isn�t always a gas station to stop and ask for the right way to go, not all gas stations are friendly enough to warrant getting out of the car for that matter. Lost, call whomever you are meeting. Not meeting anyone, call someone who�s going where you have gone before. Last ditch effort, call someone who you know is sitting in front of a computer, we all have friends like this.
